Job description

Role Overview

We are looking for an Upstream Processing Scientist to support pilot-scale upstream operations and technology transfer to external manufacturing partners. The role focuses on hands-on 100L bioprocessing, scale-up readiness, and successful transfer of upstream processes to CMOs/CDMOs.

This role is based onsite in Frankfurt.

About Formo

At Formo, we’re rebuilding dairy to help create a just and resilient food system. Using precision fermentation, we produce real, bio-identical milk proteins, starting with casein.

Instead of animals, we harness cutting-edge biotechnology to create a new generation of dairy products that are indulgent, sustainable, and scalable. Our work sits at the intersection of molecular biology, food science, and industrial innovation, bringing together science and craftsmanship to redefine what dairy can be.

Formo is a venture-backed, fast-growing company with an international team of highly skilled entrepreneurs, scientists, and operators. United by a passion for challenging the status quo, we’re building the future of food - where animal-free is hedonistic, cheese is deliciously high-tech, and anyone, anywhere can enjoy dairy without compromise.

Job requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and lead upstream bioprocess operations at the 100L pilot-plant scale, including setup, operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

  • Design and run pilot-scale experiments to support scale-up, process characterization, and transfer readiness.

  • Identify and mitigate scale-up and transfer risks related to process parameters, equipment, and raw materials.

  • Prepare and maintain upstream process and technology transfer documentation (e.g., process descriptions, batch records, SOPs, protocols, and reports).

  • Support technology transfer activities with CMOs/CDMOs, including remote or on-site technical support during engineering or GMP runs.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical progress and risks.

About You

  • M.Sc. in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemical/Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field.

  • 2+ years of hands-on upstream bioprocess experience at pilot scale (>10L; 100L preferred).

  • Experience with microbial or mammalian upstream processes.

  • Prior involvement in process or technology transfer to CMOs/CDMOs is strongly preferred.

  • Strong technical documentation, hands-on mentality and excellent communication skills.

  • Experience with ELNs and process risk assessments is a plus.

  • Adaptability, and consistent drive for process excellence.

  • Willingness to travel to support external manufacturing partners when required.
